It also assesses the oversimplified representation of Chinese censorship in American and European discourses, considering it a form of censorship in itself, which discredits or silences Chinese writers and artists. New Censorship Studies shows us that, when it comes to culture, censorship is the norm rather than the exception, and that censorship is a global phenomenon.Įngaging with New Censorship Studies through case studies from modern Chinese literary practice, this lecture will forge connections between censorship before and after the communist victory, between political censorship and moral (obscenity) censorship, and between print censorship and internet censorship. Sometimes students of color ask faculty of color to intervene on campus conflicts involving race.This lecture by Professor Michel Hockx (Professor of Chinese Literature, University of Notre Dame) will draw on the insights of New Censorship Studies to discuss examples of censorship of modern Chinese literature from both before and after the 1949 communist takeover. Faculty of color often feel overextended with mentoring too many students and helping outside the traditional bounds of the student and professor roles. Being one of a few faculty of color means you get called on lot by students as well. Students of color also add to the pressure placed on faculty of color. “And I think especially as women and people of color, you are looked at differently if you say no.” She recalls, one semester, joining seven search committees. At the same time, that work complicated their work relationships.
A second study found that professors of color felt increasing pressure to address diversity-related issues. Faculty of color, especially, worry that saying no will cost them votes at tenure time. However, in practice, for new faculty, these contractual lines are blurred. Typically professors’ contracts stipulate how much time they should devote to teaching, research, and service to the school. Regardless of race, achieving tenure requires a tremendous act of balance. “That tenure clock is ticking and getting overcommitted with committees will detract away from those other criteria that are more important,” he said. The danger, of course, is serving on too many committees,” said Abraham. “For new faculty, there is an expectation of service.
